Coffee of the Month - Sumatra Mandheling
Earthy, Spicy, Cinnamon
Sumatra Mandheling is a low toned and heavy bodied coffee with lots of depth and chocolate richness. Often considered to be among the worlds finest, Mandheling is an intriguing coffee with superb aftertaste.
The beans are processed using Giling Basah, a traditional Sumatran method, which gives the coffee a great body and flavour and a characteristic spicy finish. The parchment is hulled from the coffee beans when at 50% moisture content, instead of the usual 10-12% moisture content. This process also gives the green beans a signature dark colour. It has the nickname 'Blue Sumatra' because the beans have a bluish hue before they are roasted.
Sumatra Mandheling coffee is grown on volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser near port Padang in the Black region (west-central Sumatra). The unique Indonesian climate and volcanic soil makes for excellent coffee growing conditions.
